Late last night, while watching trash tv, a L’oreal commercial featuring JLo came on and I diverted my attention to my laptop, feigning work mode for the few minutes between my mindless entertainment. My boyfriend called my attention back to the commercial saying “Did you just see that?”
“See what?” I asked.
“It said 100% Puerto Rican just now.”
“Huh? No way, why would it say that?” I asked perplexed. My boyfriend rewound the commercial (thanks DVR!) and paused it and pointed the big bold letters on the screen. ’100% PUERTO RICAN’ right on JLo’s face.
I was so confused. Firstly, what is the significance and overall point of touting JLo’s nationality to sell make-up?
Secondly, what does being Puerto Rican have to do with the process of picking one’s shade for make-up? And finally, every Puerto RIcan’s complexion would not be the same as JLo’s.
I voiced my confusion over social media and other women voiced similar sentiment. Read More http://venusgenus.com/loreals-new-marketing-strategy-find-your-true-shade-based-on-your-nationality/
Women have been picking out make-up shades without the use of L’oreal’s haphazard ancestral nationality “guide.” I’m pretty sure I have never walked into a makeup store and said “Hey got any shades for Panamanians because we’re all the same shade ya know?” To be met with “Yes ma’am it’s actually on sale, here ya go!” What are your thoughts on this marketing ploy?
